Carrie Callahan '01/'02 - 2024 Professional Achievement Alumni Award Winner

Carrie is an Ithaca College graduate who received a Bachelor of Science degree in 2002 and Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy in 2003. She went on to complete her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from University of Montana in 2022. Inspired by some of her professors in the Physical Therapy program at Ithaca, Carrie has dedicated her career to the care of people with spinal cord injuries.

After 10 years working at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Boston, she recognized a gap in the health care industry, and in 2012, she led the creation of the non-profit, Empower Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Inc with two of her close friends. Empower SCI is a community-based organization that offers an intensive rehabilitation and recreational experience to adults and teens with spinal cord injuries. These unique client-centered programs provide life-changing experiences each summer to the 30 individuals with spinal cord injuries and the over 100 volunteers who attend annually.

Her role with Empower SCI started as a passion project, with over 10 years of volunteering to run the programs, and has since become a full-time paid position as President of the organization since 2023. In 2017, Carrie was recognized for her contributions to SCI Rehabilitation with an Award for Excellence in SCI Care from the American Physical Therapy Association.

During her time at Ithaca, Carrie was a member of the IC Women’s soccer team under Mindy Quigg, served as captain her senior year, and remains active with the team, attending alumni weekends since her graduation. Carrie currently lives outside of Boston with her daughter, Caida.  In her free time she (still) enjoys kicking the soccer ball around, snowboarding in Vermont, and riding bikes with her 3-year-old daughter.
